A MOSAIC is an assemblage of Tiles of size 160 x 120 color pixels (points on the screen). Actually, the MOSAIC window displays 16 Tiles (4 across and 4 down). Pressing the arrow keys brings in another 4 Tiles from the larger CD-ROM resident MOSAIC file. The MOSAIC itself is usually made up of 10,000 Tiles (100 x 100); some files are smaller. A Tile number is assigned to each TILE. A MASTER TILE number for each MOSAIC window is defined by the Tile in the second row from the bottom of the display and the second row from the left. This MASTER TILE number is displayed in the INFO window.
The Mandelbrot Set is like a large map which you can browse at differing resolutions. This CD-ROM has several levels of resolution available. First, a large MOSAIC of the entire Mandelbrot Set is provided at a resolution of 100 x 100 Tiles. An overview of this MOSAIC is shown in the MASTER VIEW window. Further, it is shown as a REFERENCE MOSAIC at a 640 x 480 pixel resolution. Then, the "coastline" of the MandelBrot Set is broken down into 11 other MOSAIC files that are 100 times "magnified" from the original set. Once selected from the FILE INDEX window, the MASTER VIEW window will display an overview of each of these areas, each of which also has a REFERENCE MOSAIC. Further, other smaller MOSAICs, which are usually greater magnifications of portions of the other areas, are included. Finally, if you want to see an area in any MOSAIC at a greater "magnification" than is available on the CD-ROM, there is a ZOOM capability that will permit you to calculate your own Mandelbrot image. Of course, this is much slower than viewing the pre-calculated images, but you have an infinity of images available to you this way. Other more featured and flexible Shareware or Freeware programs for computing the MandelBrot images yourself have been provided for your use in the folder labeled "Shareware" on the CD-ROM.
